4 lakh illegal immigrants in Nagaland

Dimapur, May 26 (MExN): President of Naga Council Dimapur Savi Ligiesie today lashed out that the State government has failed to check the flow of illegal immigrants, stating that there are 4 lakh illegal immigrants residing in Nagaland. He said the council had filed an RTI and the result stated that from 1963 to 2010, 28 illegal immigrants were detected and 20 were deported.

On which he said in 43 years, only 28 illegal immigrants were detected which is unbelievable and on top of that the government failed to deport all of them. “Where are the eight people?” he questioned.

Ligiesie said that while addressing the youths at 1st Life Challenge Meet 2012 organised by the Young’s Club Dimapur, May 26 at Town Hall in Dimapur. He also went on saying that government failed that is why Naga Council took the initiative of issuing identity cards to check illegal immigrants. However, the government was not so delighted about the action.

Expressing his resentment, he said it was the illegal immigrants who gang raped a “Naga woman”  on February 6 night and till now the law enforcing agency has failed to arrest one of them because there is no details about the accused to be tracked down.

On this matter, a national news agency’s report, which was published last month also reads: “Lalthara said in a statement that there were reports that certain NGOs decided to screen people belonging to a particular community to identify illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and issue identity cards to those found to be bona fide Indian citizens through the screening process. The intention of the NGOs might be good, but, except the government’s law enforcing agencies, none had the legal authority to launch such a programme, he said.”

Concerning the past and present leaders, he said leaders have “myopic vision” and are more into making “quick money”. He said Dimapur has the potentiality to become one of the best cities in Asia; however, the progress has been dwarfed by social problems and incompetent leadership. “Don’t trust our leaders, don’t trust our generation, don’t’ trust us,” he retorted.

He also called upon the youths to be courageous and build themselves in Biblical values, adding that “...unless you do this or else you will be drowned.” Elaborating on social issues, he said social problems arise when people become selfish.

He said no one seem to be bothered to directly involve to solve social issues pertaining in the society and also to speak out against corruption.

The Naga Council president said Dimapur is infested with so many social problems - illegal taxations, which are carried out by authorised and unauthorised organisations, rape, bootlegging, illegal immigrants, unregulated market prices, contract killing, car theft, prostitution, black-marketing of essential items such as LPG, artificial scarcity of essentials goods and food items, illegal drugs & spurious drugs, juvenile crime etc... He added that Dimapur has become the “crime city of Nagaland” and a “paradise for criminals”.

On taxation, he said during 1990s there were said: “…not all these unions or organizations are illegal or conduct illegal activities. However, seen from the fact that common man groan and raises hue and cry now and again, it is clear that the majority of these organizations indulge in collection of taxes from public on one pretext or the other. The Naga Council as a conglomerate tribal institution has vented its ire and displeasure of taxation year in and year out through meetings, public rallies, seminars, debate and various other forms of protest, memoranda and press & hoarding campaign. However, the menace is alive and kicking.”
