Pressing the Manipur government to book the perpetrators behind the attack on trucks and oil tankers along NH-37 on Friday, unions of drivers and transporters on Friday resolved to impose a 48-hour total shutdown in the entire state beginning from midnight of Saturday. The total shutdown will last till midnight of April 19, according to a press release of the drivers’ and transporters’ bodies.
Armed men had attacked trucks and oil tankers plying along NH-37 by firing guns to deflate tyres of trucks and oil tankers at Kaiphundai in Noney district on Friday morning. Tanks of some oil tankers were leaked after being hit by the bullets even though no casualty occurred in the incident.
The decision to impose the 48-hour total shutdown was taken in a joint meeting of the All Jiribam Road Transport & Driver’s Union and All Manipur Road Transport Driver’s & Motor Workers Union held at Jiribam Railway platform on Saturday. Drivers of trucks shipping FCI goods also attended the meeting, the press release said.
They resolved to impose the total shutdown pressing the state government to book the culprits involved in the attack on trucks and oil tankers plying along NH-37 and give befitting punishment. They also demanded adequate security protection for the truckers plying on the highways.
The press release then threatened to launch other forms of agitations if the state government fails to fulfil their demands even after the 48-hour strike.
