A four day long 4th edition of Men’s Open Basketball Tournament 2022 got underway here today at Oriental College, Kohima.
15 teams have registered for this tournament, which will continue till September 16.
“Oriental College, Kohima is celebrating 25th year of its service for higher education in Nagaland and as part of our silver jubilee celebration, the 4th Men’s Open Basketball Trophy 2022 is also incorporated,” said college principal, Dr Ketshukietuo Dzüvichü at the inaugural session.
He quoted Nelson Mandela’s speech during the Laureus World Sports Awards 2000, as saying “Sports has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire; it has the power to unite people. It speaks to the youth in a language they understand. Sports can create hope, where once there is only despair.”
Dr Dzüvichü said that sports is a universal language which can bring, power to weak, hope for the hopeless and unite the people.
He was optimistic that this tournament would bring more unity and understanding amongst the youth and give more hope in their sporting career.
Gracing the inaugural function as the special guest, Helievi-o Solo, chairman, Kohima village council said that curricular activities like sports is an essential part of educational activities, as it improve academic performance, broaden one’s environment, gives relaxation and relief stress, strengthen one’s social and organizational skills etc.
Solo said that sportspersons has to be God fearing, discipline, punctual and obedient.
He encouraged the sports persons to not just go for conventional jobs but to work hard and excel.
Earlier, the inaugural function was chaired by Keneisenuo Kuotsu while Aboli Chikhe invoked God’s blessing.
Velasu Khesoh presented a special number organizing committee convenor Ruokuovituo Zatsu administered oath to the participating teams.
Meanwhile, Visetonuo Kire, Assistant Director, School Education, Nagaland will grace the valedictory session on September 16 as the guest of honour.
The champion will get a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 along with trophy while runner-up will receive Rs. 30,000. Most Valuable Player will be awarded with Rs. 1000.

1st Match: Griffins won by 67 points against Oriental College 36 points.
2nd Match: Orca won by 71 points against Aries 41 points.
3rd Match: Taurus won by 97 points against Aztecs Basketball 39 points.

2nd Match: Arintin Ventures vs Netters–B (10:30 AM)
3rd Match: Kohima College vs Don Bosco College (12:00 noon)
4th Match: Ravens vs Ophidians (1:00 PM)
