Altogether, 56 customary courts at SDO (C) and EAC headquarters level are under construction in the state, according to the annual administrative report of the state’s department of law and justice. The construction of model district complexes at Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mon, Phek and Peren are also in progress at the total cost of Rs. 1106 lakhs.
Meanwhile, the department is proposing to provide accommodation to judicial and prosecution officers including supporting staff in all the district headquarters in phase wise manner during the financial year 2011-2012. It also proposes to set up directorate pf prosecution, formulation of state litigation policy, computerisation/modernization of district courts, construction of 16 tribal courts and improvement of state/district law library.
Mention may be made that two family courts have been established in Kohima and Dimapur with the object of catering to the different needs of the people to help in settling issues related matrimonial disputes.
In view of the minimum and nature of the cases the family court are designed to settle, the additional district & session judge of the Fast Track Court also functions as the judge of the family courts.
Further, two Fast Track Courts have been established since 2003 for disposing of the pending trial cases by additional district and session judges with their headquarters at Dimapur and Kohima.
These two FTCs are fully funded by Government of India upto March 31, 2011.
The expenses for the 2 existing FTCs have been borne by the central government and this funding pattern will be continued till March 31, 2011. However, the Gauhati High Court has recommended for the continuation of FTC till March 31, 2020. The state government is yet to take a decision on the period of continuing FTC.
