IN A significant move, the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES), New Delhi has sanctioned seven Bio-Mass Gasifier projects spread over different parts of the State. Secretary to MNES and Chairman Indian Renewal Energy Development Agency (IREDA), A.M Gokhale inaugurated a 2x50 KW Biomass Gasifier Project at Pfutseromi under Phek district on Sunday.
The Biomass Gasifier was constructed by the Nagaland Renewal Energy Development Agency (NREDA) under Rural Development. Power is generated from the Gasifier by burning wood. In this respect, Gokhale expressed confidence that the villagers would ensure the continuous supply of firewood to the power plant without destroying the forest. Two similar biomass projects at Sutemi and Panso village with a capacity of 2x20 KW each are on trial run while the other two at Asukhomi (2x100 KW) and Tizit (2X50 KW) are likely to be commissioned by March- April this year. Similar projects at Longwa with a capacity of 2x100 KW and Medziphema 2X100 KW are expected to be completed soon.
10 more proposals of such biomass projects are with the State government, it is learnt. Talking to media persons, Gokhale said that the north eastern region possesses immense potential in hydro and biomass energy.
Gokhale visited the site on Saturday last. This is the country’s first community initiation power project where a cheque worth Rs. 1.29 crore had been dispatched directly to the Village Council from the Ministry without routing it through the State Government. The Union Secretary said that the villagers will be able to use one third of the power from this project.
