There are 76 math and 112 science teacher vacancies in Nagaland as of October 31, 2021.

This was revealed at the NLA today in response to a question raised by MLA Yitachu on the last day of the assembly session. The Minister in-charge of School Education stated that on account of the partial lifting of the ban on recruitment, in accordance with the rules of the government, the department will undertake recruitment for filing up the vacancies at the earliest.

Alternative plans are also being made to utilize PGT Math/Science/Computer Teachers to teach these two subjects in the secondary level.

PWD (Housing and Mechanical) Minister, Tongpang Ozukum said this vacancy was due to many Naga educated youths found unqualified for such posts.

MLA Chotisuh Sazo added while there are many science graduates, a lot of them do not possess the requisite B.Ed qualification. In this, he suggested the department to work out some modalities by giving them time to complete B.Ed after appointment. He also suggested that some exemption be provided in the form of open recruitment, especially for math and science teachers.

Joining Sazo, NPF Legislature Party Leader, TR Zeliang said that the department must think of making some exemption as it is very difficult to get math and science teachers from the locality in every district.

“We should allow even non locals to come in as science and math teachers, otherwise, if we look only for local candidates, then the post will lie vacant for indefinite period,” he said.

School Education Advisor, KT Sukhalu said that the department is trying to work out some formula on how to conduct the recruitment. He informed that the department tried to conduct open recruitment for science and math teachers on earlier occasions, but this was objected to by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF).
