A living episode

Yajen Aier

Dr. William Carey, the founder of Serampore college and the pioneer of Christianity and Education in India was once invited to a State function by the then Governor General at Kolkota. He was introduced to the chief guest. “Here is William Carey.” The Chief Guest said, “O yes, the shoe maker.” But Carey replied, “No, Sir, I am not a shoe maker but I am a shoe repairer!” That was William Carey. He faced a number of problems. What with his workers, with his countrymen, with his natives during those early days in India and with the authorities in power. Yet he did trust in God. God was certainly with him.

I was lucky to study in that college in the early forties with a scholarship and freeship. In the final year I was privileged to serve as a warden with free food and free lodging. During early years of the college in theological wing and Arts and Science, most of the teaching staffs were Britishers. Today, the principal is from Mizoram. One day, a Naga will go there as a principal. Praise the Lord.
