Evaluation, Economics & Statistics' seminar stresses on importance of reliable data

The dynamics of data requirement by the government of the day for effective governance have tremendously increased in recent times, and the challenges to provide real time data with accurate statistics involve a meticulous institutional arrangement.
This observation was made by Advisor for Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Evaluation and Economics & Statistics, L Khumo during the state level seminar on “awareness amongst data providers on the importance of reliable statistics.”
The changing dynamics of data availability and the requirement by the government and organisation have enormously increased, said Khumo adding that official statistics are a reference point, and a compass which allows the government and its people to observe, assess and find out the progress in all field of its existence and acts as a universal language for societal interactions and decision making.
Appreciating the department for organising the seminar to generate awareness amongst data provider on importance of reliable statistics today, Khumo commented such seminar would be an aid in analyzing to what extend statistical data are reliable and timely, besides identifying the data gaps for building up a robust official statistics in the state.
Accurate and reliable data, he said plays a fundamental role in governance and society as a guiding support, highlighting the facts therein. He hoped that this seminar would be an eye opener for all the participants in dealing with official statistics of the state, adding that “a critical insight on the available data that are in use for good governance will be an added essence.”
'Statistical data akin to magic rod'
Giving the keynote address, Additional Director & HoD E&S, Neidilhou Angami said the administration data plays a very vital role in policy formulation and intervention as it directly impact the state development and economic growth as well as affecting the performances of the government in many areas.
“Statistical data are like a magic rod. It can enhance your performances and vice versa, it can make you the best performing state or reduce to the worse performing state, it can bring cheers but equally it can also disappoint you, it can increase or decrease your socio- economic profile” said Angami.
To this end, he emphasised on the urgent need to have a unified and accurate data base for the entire state for effective planning and monitoring to enhance potentialities, capabilities and perspective and thereby, build up the status and position of the state.
Stating that it is important for one to adopt carefulness and positive approaches while collecting data as wrong data begets wrong estimates, he remarked “the more robust statistics you have, the more power and effectiveness will derive.”
The advisor also released the Gender Statistics 2021 and short video on registration of births & death.
The seminar was organised by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics under the support for Statistical Strengthening (SSS) 2021-22 on November 30 at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima on November 30.
The purpose of the seminar is to generate awareness amongst data providers and users of all line departments responsible in providing reliable statistics for better planning and development of the state.
The various topics were covered during the technical session with Kevileno Angami, special secretary, DE&S, Medongoi Rhakho, deputy director, higher education, Ar. Richard Belho, chairman, Zynorique Initiative Society and Yanpvuo Kikon, senior consultant, NISG, NeGD, Ministry of Electronics & IT.
