Electoral Roll Observer (ERO) for Longleng, Y Kikheto Sema, IAS, Agriculture Production Commissioner visited Longleng and held a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall with the DC, election department and political parties on December 12.
The meeting was held in connection with Summary Revision of Electoral Roll for the year 2020 which was chaired by M Shayung Phom, DC & DEO Longleng.
During the meeting, Kikheto highlighted the importance of democracy stating that Election is its pillar. Referring to Article 324 and 325, he said that the revision process is based on equality and does not discriminate any person and that all eligible citizens must enrol themselves as a voter. He said that having a clean electoral roll also pertains to removing the names of those who have expired as in many instances such names continue to exist in the electoral roll. The ERO appreciated the improvement of gender ratio in the district.
Further, he urged the members to cooperate and put efforts to discourage duplicate voters and emphasise on ‘one man, one vote’ for a clean electoral roll.
The Longleng DC encouraged all the members to communicate and coordinate with each other for a free, fair and clean Electoral Roll.
Later, Kikheto also inspected polling station at Bhumnyu village and interacted with the leaders. He maintained that India being the largest democracy would be rendered meaningless if the electoral roll and election system was not clean.
The Observer said that Nagaland as a Christian state had a lot to learn from states like Mizoram and Meghalaya as far as clean election system was concerned. He opined that advocating clean election only during polls was not enough but there was a need to constantly spread the message through various platforms including the church and Sunday schools with special focus on the young generation.
Further, he noted that most of the government schools in the state were in shabby condition and called for community and the Church support in this regard.
