Aggrieved teachers flay Cabinet decision

Dimapur, September 8 (MExN): In an instantaneous reaction to the statement made by Chief Secretary of Nagaland about the termination of around 400 cases of aggrieved teachers in the ‘bogus teachers scam,’ the Aggrieved Teachers Association Nagaland (ATAN) took to protest at the DIS office premises in Dimapur this morning. Numbering about 300, the aggrieved teachers flayed the decision of the State Cabinet and said that they have been betrayed once again. The Chief Secretary after a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday told a section of the media that the names of more than 300 teachers have been cleared, while the case of around 400 teachers has to be terminated.

ATAN said on Monday evening it received a letter from the Chief Minister’s Office, requesting the Association to suspend its agitation scheduled for Tuesday outside the State Secretariat in Kohima. The letter assured that the CM would take up the issue of aggrieved teachers in the Cabinet meeting. The CM also assured that all educationally qualified teachers would be absorbed back into the service, ATAN claimed. Consequently, ATAN called off its agitation and some executive members if the Association went to Kohima to enquire about the outcome.

After the Cabinet meeting one MLA reportedly stepped out and told them that the Cabinet has decided to absorb all educationally qualified teachers. However, the Cabinet’s decision which was disclosed by the Chief Secretary is nothing close to what was assured to them, ATAN said.

As a result, the Association has decided to begin an indefinite agitation in Kohima outside the State Secretariat starting Thursday. ATAN members said it will not budge from their demand- for the government to implement the assurance given by the CM.

The protesters were visibly agitated while some angered by ATAN’s decision to suspend the agitation on the request of the CMO. They didn’t believe the CMO would have kept its assurance. The protestors, comprising mainly of teachers from Dimapur district, said they would give full support during the indefinite agitation at Kohima.
