Mokokchung | December 7
Giving a major boost to the promotion of rural tourism, the deputy commissioner of Mokokchung, Bendangkokba on Saturday inaugurated Aier Tea Park at the tourist village of Mopungchuket, 18 kilometers away from Mokokchung town.
The Park is established in memory of late Sashimeren Aier IAS (1921-1997) by family members. Late Aier took voluntary retirement from office 6 years short of his actual year to retire, "to serve the people" according to family sources. He was then holding the office of Development Commissioner, government of Nagaland.
Bendangkokba during the inauguration of Aier Tea Park said that the late bureaucrat was a statesman "who loved the Nagas, who loved Nagaland, who loved Mopungchuket…" and added that he was a visionary who believed that industrialization was necessary for development of Nagaland. Sashimeren played a major role in the establishment of the now defunct Sugar Mill at Dimapur and the Paper Mill at Tuli, according to Bendangkokba. He also encouraged the village council of Mopungchuket to continue cooperating and contributing towards the development of the tourist village. He lauded the members of the Aier family for establishing the Tea Park, which embodies the "legacy of the selfless leader, Sashimeren Aier."
Aier Tea Park is located at the popular picnic spot of Mangkolong in Mopungchuket village. The park is established at an area in the 35 acre tea garden, regarded as the first tea garden in Nagaland started by Sashimeren Aier. Mongsen Aier, son of Sashimeren Aier said that the park is open to all at nominal charge.
