Dimapur, August 21 (MExN): The All India Professional Congress, Nagaland Chapter celebrated the 76th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi through a webinar on August 20.
The main speaker for the event, Captain GK Zhimomi elaborated on the topic “Life and Times of Rajiv Gandhi,” according to a press release.
As per the release, the AIPC Nagaland Chapter paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi, a leader who inspired hope and promise among millions of Indians and conceived India as a true global power.
It said that Gandhi signed three political accords— the Punjab Accord, the Assam Accord and Mizoram Accord which weigh a lot till today. It also pointed out that during an election rally at Dimapur in May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi categorically mentioned that if given the chance to return to power, the Congress would ensure talks with the Naga political groups, without any preconditions.
Although, Gandhi was unfortunately assassinated two days after the announcement, the next Gongress government led by PV Narasimha Rao “offered an olive branch to the Naga Political groups at that time, which eventually culminated in a ceasefire in July 1997,” the release stated.
The AIPC also acknowledged Gandhi’s contributions in the IT and telecom revolution in India and the national education policy to expand higher education programs across the country. To harness the power of youth in nation building, he lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 years, it added.
