CYO cautions against illegal riverbed mining in Chakhroma area

Chümoukedima, November 6 (MExN): The Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO) has reiterated its prohibition on unauthorised riverbed mining, dredging and extraction activities in all rivers, streams and water bodies within Chakhroma jurisdiction, warning violators of strict action, including penalties and confiscation of machinery and vehicles.

In a statement issued on November 5, the CYO said the enforcement was in accordance with the unanimous joint resolution adopted by the Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) on October 31, 2025, in consultation with all Village Councils under its jurisdiction, and the executive regulatory order issued by the Deputy Commissioner, Chümoukedima, on November 3, 2025.

The organisation said that despite explicit directives, prohibitory notifications and the constitution of monitoring mechanisms by the district administration, certain individuals, contractors and machinery operators continued to carry out illegal riverbed extraction in violation of community decisions and administrative orders.

The CYO also expressed concern over the practice of transporting rocks and boulders quarried from mountains and hill slopes into river channels and washing them directly in flowing water.

It said the practice caused heavy siltation, polluted rivers and affected drinking and irrigation water sources downstream, besides destroying local aquatic life. The washing of mountain-extracted rocks and boulders in any river or stream within Chakhroma jurisdiction has been strictly prohibited with immediate effect, it added.

Issuing what it termed a final warning, the CYO directed all individuals, contractors, vehicle operators and extraction units involved in such activities to cease operations immediately.

It cautioned that anyone found engaging in riverbed mining or washing mountain-extracted rocks and boulders in rivers would face strict action, including severe penalties and immediate confiscation of machinery, tools and transport vehicles.

The organisation also directed all affiliated youth units, village monitoring groups and citizens across the Chakhroma area to maintain vigilance in their respective jurisdictions and report any violations to the CYO without delay.
