Kohima, August 11 (MExN): The 33rd freshers’ day 2025 celebration of Alder College Kohima was graced by MLA, Kohima town, Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhütso as the guest of honour at Dr Setu Memorial Hall on August 11.

In his short speech, Dr Rhütso highlighted that education is the most important part of one’s life to become successful. He emphasised on holistic education to skill up and refine oneself, a DIPR report stated.

Dedication towards one’s aim in life is the most important besides time management and positive attitude, he asserted.

He encouraged the students to truly work hard and pass out as good graduates rather than mere degree holders as there may be endless possibilities but nothing comes easy.

Alder College, Principal, Dr Medotsino T Nakhro, in her address said that this is a special phase in one’s academic life, marking the beginning of the exciting journey into higher education.

Alder College, established in 1992, earned a B+ grade from the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) in 2016 and retained the same grade in its second assessment in February 2025, she mentioned.

She highlighted that the college prioritises academic excellence, value-based education, and holistic learning, extending beyond textbooks, offering diverse courses across departments, including skill-based and value-added courses.

Alder College has introduced the Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUGP) under NEP 2020, becoming the “first college in Kohima district” to do so. Starting this academic session, the program is offered in six disciplines, along with the introduction of Tenyidie (Major).

She added that the college upholds traditional values, reflected in its co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Notably, it has adopted Naga wrestling as a best practice, featuring it in the Annual Sports Week since 2013.

In 2022, it hosted the first Inter-Collegiate Naga Wrestling Competition. Aligned with NEP 2020, this initiative integrates local traditions, encourages physical and moral development, and contributes to community engagement. Additionally, the annual Alder Fest serves as a platform for students to showcase their talents, fostering skills in marketing management, dignity of labour, and collaborative learning.

The college has secured 1st runner-up at the nationwide quiz contest on official statistics (Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Govt of India), and 1st and 2nd positions at the District-level Youth Parliament Event organised by Directorate of Youth Resources and Sports.

Nakhro encouraged students to demonstrate strong discipline and consistent effort in their academic pursuits, to make the most of their time building strong relationships, engage in extracurricular activities, and strive for excellence in all.
