Allegation of rotten poultry stock racket in Dimapur not isolated: CPO & WSH

Demand cancellation of trade licences and permanent ban on culprits

Dimapur/Chümoukedima, August 28 (MExN): Allegations of an organised racket behind the circulation of rotten poultry have surfaced in Dimapur following the reported discovery of a bulk stock of decayed chicken at a poultry godown in New Market earlier this week.

Accordingly, the Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) and the Western Sümi Hoho (WSH) have alleged that the recent recovery by municipal authorities was not an “isolated case but part of a recurring malpractice that seems to be an organised racket.”

In a joint statement issued on August 28, the two organisations maintained that there was a similar instance earlier, but the matter ended without “transparency on the outcome or any action against the culprits.”

Such lack of accountability emboldens unscrupulous traders to continue endangering consumers, the CPO and WSH asserted.

The sale or storage of rotten chicken for potential circulation poses a grave threat to public health, unknowingly exposing the public to contaminated food, risking serious illnesses and long-term consequences, the organisations added.

“This is a direct assault on the well-being of the people of Dimapur and Nagaland at large,” the duo held.

While appreciating the vigilance of Ward-19 Councillor Kili N Sumi and her team for exposing the malpractice, the CPO and WSH, however, stated that seizure and sealing of godowns would “not suffice.”

“We demand stringent and exemplary action, including immediate cancellation of trade licences of those involved,” they added.

The organisations further urged the law enforcement agencies, district administration, and the Dimapur Municipal Council to act “swiftly, transparently and with utmost seriousness” to safeguard the health and rights of the people.
