RSU meets H&TE Minister, optimistic about establishment of college by 2021

Tseminyu, August 25 (MExN): The Rengma Students’ Union (RSU) on Tuesday reiterated its demand for setting up of a Government College at Tseminyu.

It stated that, having received no concrete communiqué and the matter yet to be approved by the State Government, the Union is constrained to highlight the issue.

The RSU said it had officially put up its proposal and submitted a memorandum on the same to the Governor of Nagaland on December 17 in 2015.

“Several efforts have been made in the past in this regard by the then Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya and the State Government, however, due to weak political will of the time, the demand for the same still remains to be fulfilled,” it said.

Relating the sequence of events for “public consumption,” the RSU said that at present, there are 2 Higher Secondary Schools under Tseminyu sub-division where hundreds of students are awarded their 10+2 certificates in a year.

“However, there is no Government college in Tseminyu area, due to which many students have to forfeit their studies after 10+2 as they cannot afford degree courses outside the region,” it added.

Accordingly, RSU submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Nagaland on December 17, 2015 during its 38th General Conference at Sendenyu Village, with a request for establishment of a Government College at Tseminyu, the Union informed.

Following an official communiqué from the Governor’s Secretariat dated February 1, 2016 to the Chief Minister, Nagaland, the Commissioner and Secretary (H&TE) was directed to examine the matter for necessary action on February 10, 2016.

The then Governor further wrote to the Parliamentary Secretary (H&TE) to take up the matter of establishing a Government college during the academic session 2016-17 on priority, the RSU said.

A reminder was again issued on June, 2016. Consequently, an Inspection Report in this regard was submitted to the Director (HE), with a clear recommendation for setting up a college at Tseminyu, the RSU added.

While the Government of Nagaland announced its efforts to establish a college at Tseminyu under PPP basis on January 26, 2017, the establishment of Government College at Tseminyu is yet to be approved even after a lapse of nearly 5 years, the Union highlighted.

It however, expressed optimism on the outcome of its recent meeting with the Minister, Higher & Technical Education and Tribal Affairs, Temjen Imna Along on August 24.

In the meeting, the Union briefed the Minister about the ‘precedent threat’ of forfeiting their academic pursuit of degree courses after 10+2 being faced by the students.

It mentioned having received positive assurance from the Minister-in-charge and the present government of its commitment to establish a model college at Tseminyu.

The Union expressed confidence that the fulfillment of the ‘long cherished dream’ of a Government College at Tseminyu will come into effect from the next academic session 2021.
