In Nagaland, a total of 11 circles have a total literacy rate above 90%. Of these, 6 circles fall under Mokokchung district, while the remaining 5 are spread over Zunheboto, Wokha and Longleng districts. A total of 56 circles have a literacy rate above the State average of 80.11%. The district with the highest number of circles with literacy rates above the State average are Zunheboto district with 11 out of 13 circles, Wokha district with 10 out of 12 circles and Mokokchung district with 8 out of 9 circles.
This was stated in the Census of India 2011, Provisional Population Total, Paper 2, Volume II of 2011, Rural-Urban distribution, Nagaland, which was released here last week by the State’s directorate of census operations. It stated that 58 circles have literacy below the State average. Districts with the highest number of circles below the State average are Mon, Tuensang, and Kiphire districts. The circle with the highest literacy rate in Mon district is Mon Sadar with 76.47%. In Kiphire district, out of 8 circles, only one circle has a literacy rate above the State average and in Tuensang district, out of 16 circles 2 circles have literacy rate above the State average. 27 circles in the State have male literacy rate above 90% while 7 circles have female literacy rate above 90%.
Nagaland had an impressive growth rate of literacy in the last decade, from 66.59% in 2001 to 80.11% in 2011. However 11 circles have registered a negative growth rate, out of which 4 circles are in Wokha district.
The circle with the highest decline in literacy levels is Phor circle under Phek district with – 13.45%. The decline in male is -11%, while the decline in female is -16.15%. In 2001, the literacy rate in Phor circle was 70.87%, which fell to 57.43% in 2011. This is followed by Nihokhu under Dimapur district, with a decline of -12.36%, from 59.09% in 2001 to 46.73% in 2011.
The circles with the highest decadal growth rate in literacy levels are; Akuhaito in Zunheboto district with 40.67% increase, followed by Nsong in Peren District with an increase of 37.76%, Longmatra in Kiphire district and Yongnyah in Longleng district with an increase of 33.31% and 32.81% respectively.
In female literacy, the Circles with the highest increase are Akuhaito with 42.71%, Nsong with 39.49% and Yongnyah with 32.26% increase.
The average gap between male and female literacy rate in the State in 2011 is 6.60 points. Mokokchung district which has a literacy rate of 92.68%, has the lowest gap at 1.81 points. Phek district has the widest gap with 12.07 points, followed by Kiphire district with 11.43 points and Peren district with 10.99 points. Razieba Circle under Phek district, with male literacy rate of 83.42% and female literacy rate of 63.78% has the widest gap with 19.64 points.
In the urban areas of the State, which comprises of 19 statutory towns and 7 census towns, Satakha (Census Town) under Zunheboto district has the highest literacy rate of 98.48%, followed by Changtongya under Mokokchung district with 96.79% and Wokha Sadar under Wokha district with 96.47%. Phek Sadar under Phek district has the lowest literacy rate, with 79.13%, followed by Naginimora under Mon district with 80.29%.
In Rural areas, 7 circles have literacy rates above 90% of which 5 circles are from Mokokchung districts.
Among the districts, the highest decadal growth in female literacy is seen in Tuensang, Kiphire, Zunheboto and Mon districts. The corresponding rates are 29.59%, 21.34%, 19.09% and 16.04% respectively.
District wise analysis of literacy in 2001 and 2011 and decadal difference
MON: Mon district has a total literacy rate of 56.60% in 2011, with 60.38% male literates and 52.39% female literates. In absolute figures this amounts to 119496 out of the total population of 250671. Among the circles, Pomching has the lowest literacy rate with 28.88%. It also has the lowest male and female literacy rates in the district, with 32.30% and 25.11% respectively. The circle with the highest literacy rate is Mon Sadar with 76.47%. In the urban area of Mon Sadar, the literacy rate is 87.87% which is well above the State literacy rate but below the State urban literacy rate of 90.21%. Monyakshu circle has the highest increase in decadal growth rate, with 25.15%, while the circle with the lowest literacy growth rate is Mopong circle with a figure of 6.37%.
MOKOKCHUNG: Mokokchung district has the highest percentage of literacy in the State, with 92.68%. Among the circles, Merangmen is the only circle which falls below the State literacy rate of 80.11%. Merangmen Circle is also the only circle in the district with a decadal decrease in literacy rate, where the literacy rate which was 85.11% in 2001 has fallen to 76.48% in 2011.Alongkima circle has the highest literacy rate in the district with 96.41%. The male literacy rate is 97.33%, which is the highest in the State and female literacy rate is 95.48%, which is the second highest in the State. Changtongya Circle has the highest female literacy rate in the district as well as in the State, with a figure of 95.96%.
ZUNHEBOTO: Zunheboto district has a literacy rate of 86.26%. Of this, the male literacy rate is 88.86% and female literacy rate is 83.61%. The decadal increase in literacy levels in the district is more in females than in males, with 19.09% and 15.11% increase in female and male literacy respectively. Satakha circle has the highest literacy rate in the district with 90.58% and Satoi circle has the lowest rate of literacy in the district with 73.16%. Akuhaito circle has had a huge decadal increase of 40.67% in literacy rate, while Satoi shows the lowest decadal increase of 5.46%. Among female literates, Atoizu has the highest female literacy with 89.62%. In urban areas, Satakha circle has the highest female literacy rate with 97.61%. Satakha has also the highest percentage of urban male literacy rate with 99.18%.
WOKHA: Wokha district has a literacy rate of 87.60% with 90.53% male literacy rate and 84.58% female literacy rate. In the district, Wokha Sadar has the highest literacy rate with 92.99%, while Ralan Circle has the lowest rate of literacy in the district, with 68.69%. Ralan has a decadal decrease of -4.83% in literacy rate. The circle with the highest female literacy rate is Wokha Sadar with 90.35%. In Rural areas, the circle with the highest female literacy rate is Bhagty with 88.94% and in Urban areas, the circle with the highest female literacy rate is Wokha Sadar with 95.56%.
DIMAPUR: Dimapur district has a literacy rate of 85.44%. The male literacy rate is 88.07% while the female literacy rate is 82.54%. The decadal increase in female literate rate which is 10.65% is higher than the decadal increase in male literacy rate which is 6.90%. Among the circles Chumukedima circle has the highest literacy rate with 88.38% and Nihokhu has the lowest rate of literacy with 46.73%. Nihokhu circle has declined in literacy rate in the last decade by -12.36%. Of this, the male literacy rate reduced by -12.56% and female literacy rate reduced by -11.70%. In female literacy rate, the Circle with the highest literacy rate is Chumukedima circle with 85.19%. In rural areas, the circle with the highest female literacy rate is Dimapur Sadar is 84.74%, while in urban areas, Medziphema circle has the highest female literacy with 86.77%.
PHEK: Phek district has a total literacy rate of 79.13%, with male literacy rate of 84.53% and female literacy rate of 73.50%. The decadal increase in female literacy rate is 11.24%, while in males, the corresponding figure is 6.16%. Chozuba Circle has the highest literacy rate with 85.87% and Phor Circle has the lowest literacy rate with 57.43%. Phor circle has had a decadal decline in literacy levels by -13.45%. Zuketsa Circle has the highest female literacy rate with 84.06%. In the urban areas, Pfutsero circle has the highest literacy rate with 84.25%.
Tuensang: Tuensang district has literacy rate of 73.70%, with a male literacy rate of 76.76% and female literacy rate of 70.40%. The decadal increase in the district is 21.55% which is remarkably high and above the State decadal increase of 13.52%. The decadal increase in literacy rate in males is 16.93% and 26.95% in females. Similar to the trend in the State where the decadal increase in female literacy rates is higher than the males, the district of Tuensang also shows an increase in female literacy rate which is much higher than that of the males. Among the circles with the highest rate of literacy, Chare has the highest literacy rate of 89.51% and the circle with the lowest literacy rate is Nokhu with 53.59%. The circle with highest female literacy rate is Chare with 94.60%. In the urban areas, Tuensang Sadar has a female literacy rate of 89.89% which is above the State urban female literacy rate of 88.10%.
LONGLENG: Longleng district has a literacy rate of 73.10% with a male literacy rate of 75.60% and female literacy rate of 70. 35%. The decadal increase in the district is 28.28%, which is the highest in the State. Tamlu Circle has the highest literacy rate of 91.23% and the lowest is Namsang Circle with 62.88%. The Circle with the highest decadal growth is Yongnyah with 32.81%. In 2001, the same circle has a literacy rate of 32.67%, which increased to 65.48% in 2011. Tamlu circle has the highest female literacy rate with 89.10%. Longleng circle has the highest urban literacy rate in the district with 92.85%.
KIPHIRE: Kiphire district has a literacy rate of 71.10%, with male literacy rate of 76.54% and female literacy rate of 65.44%. The decadal increase in literacy is 20.87%, which is one of the highest in the State after Longleng district and Tuensang district. Longmatra circle has the highest decadal increase with 33.31%. All the circles had a decadal growth in literacy levels above 13%. Among the circles, Kiphire Sadar has the highest literacy rate with 85.03%, while Khongsa circle has the lowest literacy rate with 49.51%. The circle with the highest female literacy rate is Kiphire Sadar with 80.85%.
KOHIMA: Kohima district has a literacy rate of 85.58%, with male literacy rate of 89.28% and female literacy rate of 81.56%. The district has increased in literacy rate in the last decade by 7.58%, of which the decadal increase in male literacy rate is 5.77% and increase in female literacy rate is 9.78%. Among the circles, Kohima Sadar has the highest literacy rate with 89.77%, Kezocha has the lowest literacy rate with 74.23%. Kohima Sadar has the highest female literacy rate with 86.97%. In urban areas, Kohima Sadar has the highest female literacy rate with 87.27%. In the rural areas, the circle with the highest female literacy rate is Tsogin with 86.26%.
PEREN: Peren district has a literacy rate of 79.00% in 2011. The male literacy rate is 83.96% while the female literacy rate is 73.57%. In the last decade, the rate of literacy has increased by 13.09%. Similar to the trend in the State, the decadal increase in literacy rate in females is 14.17% which is higher than the decadal increase in the male literacy rate which is 11.90%.Nsong circle has the highest decadal growth rate with a figure of 37.76%. Athibung circle has the highest literacy rate with 87.37% and Kebai Khelma circle has the lowest literacy rate with 68.75%. The circle with the highest female literacy rate in rural area in Athibung with 83.53%. In urban areas, Peren Sadar has the highest literacy rate with 84.48%.
