ANCSU appeals for fairer evaluation and support amid NEP 2020 transition

DIMAPUR, JULY 19 (MExN): The All Nagaland College Students' Union (ANCSU) has raised concerns regarding the recently declared undergraduate results for the 2nd and 4th semesters at Nagaland University. In a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, ANCSU highlighted several issues stemming from the transition to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, calling for immediate remedial action to support students.

The NEP 2020 aims to foster holistic student development by integrating co-curricular activities and vocational education while enhancing employability. However, ANCSU emphasized that the transition has been problematic. "Institutions in Nagaland are still transitioning to implement NEP 2020. Consequently, the dropout rate for the 2nd and 4th semesters has been unusually high this academic year," ANCSU stated. This issue not only tarnishes the reputation of the institutions and the university but also jeopardizes the academic future of thousands of students, it added.

The letter cited numerous errors in the recent results, including missing student names, incorrect subject honors, and unentered marks. Specifically, issues were reported with VAC 15 and VAC 2 in the BA 2nd semester final results. Furthermore, the mark sheets and NU roll numbers for the 1st semester have yet to be dispatched to students. ANCSU argued that such discrepancies reflect poorly on the university's implementation of the new policy.

ANCSU strongly proposed a review of the mark moderation procedure to make the policy more student-friendly and reduce the number of failures. "We have observed a higher number of backlogs than passed students, and this poor result may cause long-term harm and skepticism regarding NEP 2020's implementation in our state," the union noted. They also recommended that the 1st semester answer sheets be examined by respective colleges to better support students who are new to the system.

Given the concerns, ANCSU appealed to Nagaland University to provide a one-time relaxation for students who have failed up to three papers, allowing them to advance to the next semester. "The recently declared results have drastically reduced the pass rate, causing anxiety and unrest among students, and discouraging them from pursuing higher studies," ANCSU explained. They also recommended that NU issue acknowledgment slips to all colleges upon receiving documents, whether submitted online or offline, to ensure better tracking and accountability.

ANCSU urged Nagaland University to assess the circumstances with sincerity and demonstrate its commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
