Dimapur, July 30 (MExN): In a bid to revive the traditional ethos of community service during cultural festivals, the Ao community in Signal Angami village, Dimapur organised a social work programme on Thursday morning as part of the Tsüngremmung festival.
Traditionally, Ao Naga festivals such as Moatsü and Tsüngremmung were observed not just with feasting, but also with community labour to clean public paths, wells, and paddy field approaches on the eve of celebrations. However, elders note that this practice has been largely abandoned in recent times.
“The younger generation has come to believe that festivals are only for enjoyment without work,” community leaders observed, stressing the need to correct this notion.
In response, over the past week, residents cleared drainage channels, cut overgrown weeds along the main road, and removed garbage from public spaces in a concerted cleanliness drive.
Tsüngremmung is a major pre-harvest festival of the Ao Naga tribe, traditionally observed during the first week of August every year.
