The much anticipated Aowli Benjongmong (Festival) 2018 organised by the Watsü Mungdang, the apex organization of the Ao women, was declared open today at Imkongmeren Sports complex, Mokokchung by Aolemla, Retd Addl Development Commissioner.
Aolemla, while declaring the festival open said that we should follow the ways of our forefathers who were thruthful, sincere, honest and hardworking and earned with their sweat. She appreciated the Watsü Mungdang for their efforts in bringing sustainable change and encouraged the women folks to give importance to research works and innovations.
The first day of the Aowli festival was marked as the day of culture where different idigenous games competitions were held among the 18 wards of Mokokchung followed by a Western and Folk fusion show in the evening. The winners of Stilt bamboo race were Alempang (first) and Yimyu (second); Catapult shooting: Alempang (first)and Penli (second); and Spear throw : Salangtem (first) and Marepkong (second).
The second day of the Aowli Benjongmong will witness inter-ward women tug of war and a show in the evening promoting Ao artists.
There are more than fifty stalls which include food, handicraft, games, flowers and many other locally produced products. There is also a gallery for farmers to sell their locally grown organic fruits ad vegetables. Another feature of the festival is the live demonstration of various handiworks including weaving, yarn making and spinning and pottery.
