
Kohima | August 18 : Unable to withstand the pressure of investigation officers, one arrested person has reportedly confessed the killing of one Habil Ali on August 14 at Lakhuti village that led to tensions between Kyong Nagas and non-Naga communities in the Assam-Nagaland border. Police said one Suro Bhai Ali, 33 years old is said to have confessed last evening to murdering Habil Ali, a cattle dealer. The accused is reported to have been sent to Judicial Custody in Wokha this morning.
Speaking to The Morung Express, OC of Bhandari, TC Lotha, investigation officer said the suspected partners of the victim who were detained under suspicion confessed last night around 10.00 pm. He said that the accused confessed that he and Habil (victim) were partners in the cattle business for almost six months and during early part of August they both took money amounting to Rs. 22,000 from the cattle host (Lakhuti villager) as advance and that money had been used by Habil. This forced both to take cattle on credit.
The accused allegedly claimed to have been unable to stand the ‘pressure’ and ‘insult’ to pay off the debts and finally took his decision to murder his friend. A 12 year old boy who went along with them identified the weapon allegedly used by the murderer in killing his friend. The Kyong Hoho who launched an indefinite bandh since yesterday said the strike will continue while also anticipating a joint meeting tomorrow with civil societies and counterparts.
Meanwhile, former president Naga Students Federation Achumbemo Kikon, who has been mentoring the situation with the Assam Students Union, said the Golaghat unit of the All Assam Students’ Union staged a light protest in front of Golaghat Deputy Commissioners’ office today demanding befitting punishment to the culprits. The Assam students’ leaders also appealed to the people of both the states not to break the “cordial relationship” it was informed.It was also informed that the Assam students’ leaders expressed their desire to meet civil societies and leader of the Kyong Nagas.
