Dimapur, April 9 (MExN): The Diphupar Village Council (DVC) has urged the State’s Irrigation & Flood Control Department to see that a concrete protective embankment comes along the stretch bordering Christian Institute of Health, Science & Research (CIHSR), at Diphu River (Chathe River). A press note issued by I. Vitoshe Kinimi, chairman DVC stated that in the event of any lackadaisical exercise, the land donor village Diphupar of CIHSR will enforce stern restriction to carry out any works rather than construction of a concrete protective wall in the interest of all concern. This was stated in the interest of CIHSR in particular and its stake holders in general.
DVC in the note stated that the painstaking initiative of the State’s Irrigation & Flood Control Department to safeguard the embankment of Diphu River (Chathe River) along the jurisdiction of Diphupar from the fury of monsoon erosion is worthy of appreciation from all sections. It cited that the devastations caused by the last torrential rain especially on the stretch bordering CIHSR nearly washed away the only reputed medical centre in the state, but a sign of relief dawned when the department announced its effort to restore the damages and also uphold resolute exercise to withstand further disaster.
“But, the months of wait seems to end regretfully as the work in manual term is deemed to be taken up on patch work exercise with stones wrapped in iron wires huddled up against the wall of the muddy embankment,” stated DVC in the note and added that this same exercise was done during 2003-04 to control the erosion but it could hardly stand a couple of seasons and then the last monsoon saw the worse ever erosion which would have scrap away the whole lot of CIHSR had it not been for a few fearful feet.
DVC further stated that it has been quite some time since NEC sanctioned an estimated amount of Rs. 4.40 crores for anti-erosion work on Diphu River (Chathe River) for the protection of CIHSR. And now if the work is to be completed on nominal basis with boulders wrapped iron wires as done earlier instead of a concrete protective embankment, it can be seen that the next flood will see no remains of the much talked about CIHSR complex.
