
ICAR Nagaland Centre holds training on Pig Value Chain
Medziphema, December 2 (MExN): Almost 90% of pigs in Phek districts were reportedly affected by the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in the first quarter of 2021.
Cluster Coordinator, Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS), Julia Rova gave the information during a three-day training on “Role of Tribal Women in Strengthening of Pig Value Chain in Nagaland” organised by the ICAR Nagaland Centre from November 29-December 1 in coordination with CWWS.
Expressing gratitude for selecting the CWWS for the training and Centre’s efforts in promoting pig breeding in Nagaland, she further requested ICAR's help in strengthening the tribal women engaged in pig farming in her district.
According to an ICAR release, the training conducted under NASF Project “Pork Marketing Chains in North East India for Sustainable Livelihood of Tribal Women (Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland)"was attended by 35 farmers from 30 villages in Phek district.
Under this project, pork value chain is mapped in Nagaland for the first time vis a vis role of tribal women, it said.
Dr DJ Rajkhowa, Joint Director, ICAR Nagaland Centre, at the training shared on narrated the farmers about modern livestock production technologies being disseminated by ICAR Nagaland Centre. Further, he urged the young farmers to take up the challenge of pig breeding and assured them for providing support from ICAR Nagaland Centre.
The training covered the topics on pig production, biosecurity and waste management, financial amd digital literacy, business model and pork processing enterprises. A total of 300 doses of Classical Swine Fever vaccine as well as Vanaraja and Srinidhi chicks (1295) were also provided to the farmers, the release added.
