ASI lists Nagaland sites for Heritage funds

Dimapur, June 19 (MExN): The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has released a list of centrally protected monuments in the country, including four in Nagaland, for which the central Ministry of Culture is understood to be considering central funds for the protection and preservation of the select heritage sites. The Ministry of Culture said in an official release that the “details of the expenditure is being collected and will be laid on the table of the House.”
Nagaland has four of her monuments – one in Dimapur and three in Kohima – in the list of centrally protected monuments in the country, as outlined in the release of the Ministry of Culture, issued July 14.
The country has 3676 centrally protected monuments or heritage sites, including 507 in the state of Karnataka alone and declared as being of national importance under the provision of section 4 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
A copy of the Union Ministry of Culture’s release said the Archaeological Survey of India looks after the maintenance, conservation, preservation and environmental development in and around these centrally protected monuments in accordance with archaeological norms as per need and priority. “The details of the expenditure is being collected and will be laid on the table of the House,” the release said.
The list did not provide details about the monuments except for their number. There were four monuments mentioned for Nagaland. Nonetheless, the ASI’s site mentioned the remains of a fort in Dimapur, most possibly the Kachari Ruins, also called the ‘Dimapur Ruins.’ The second monument was stated as a memorial for British soldiers GH Damout, Major Cook and Subedar Nurbir Sahi who fell to Japanese soldiers at Khonoma village in Kohima during WWII; a Stone Cairn to the memory of Damut and the fourth monument, Lt. H.Forbe’s Grave, also in Kohima.
