Zunheboto, February 2 (MExN): ATMA Akuluto block organized demonstrations on ‘introduction of Knolkhol as a commercial crop’ and ‘Handling of maize shellers for small scale farmers’ at VK Town on January 29.

Kaiho Achumi, ATM and Tsuktilemla, BTM Akuluto Block were the resource person. They shared that Knolkhol also known as kohlrabi is a cool season crop which is an increasing important crop can be commercially grown in the areaand fetch great profit for the farmers. They can be eaten raw as well as cooked; the commercial cultivation of Kholrabi in the entire state is very limited which can be an opportunity for the farmers.

Reducing post-harvest losses is an important task to ensure food security and increase farm income for small farmers. Maize is an important major crop in the area and shelling is one of the major stages of post-harvest loss during the harvest. Traditional threshing incurs heavy loss and drudgery to women and consumes lot of time. Thus, maize sheller helps in reducing the losses and improves working condition of the farmers.

A total of 15 farmers attended the programme which was followed by an interaction with farmers along with Maize sheller and seeds distribution
