Kiphire, February 4 (MExN): ATMA Kiphire, Longmatra block organized demonstrations on ‘Oyster mushroom cultivation’ targeting women Self Help Groups (SHGs) and ‘cultivation practices of green pea and tomato’ at Tsongphong village on January 29.

A press release from ATMA Kiphire Longmatra block stated that resource person Tsungrozen, ATM Longmatra block gave hands on demonstration and deliberated on benefits of mushroom cultivation and its contribution in elevating the economic status of the family. He also stressed on cultivation practices and health benefits of green pea and tomato which can be grown in any kitchen garden. Mushroom spawns and seeds of green pea and tomato were distributed at the end of the programme to the beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, two other demonstration programmes were conducted by ATMA Longmatra block on February 1, at Longmatra village under the topics ‘double row system in pineapple cultivation’ and ‘organic mulching practices.’

Moakumzuk, BTM Longmatra block emphasized the important steps for implementing double row system in pineapple cultivation which gives more profit, allows maximum use of land, less weed infestations and protect the plant from sun burn and lodging of fruits due to mutual support of plants and also encouraged the participants to practice organic mulching for its relative low cost, improving organic content of soil, moisture and temperature, infiltration, prevents surface runoff, weed growth and increasing yield.

A total of 36 farmers attended the demonstration along with ATMA officials which was followed by an interactive session with the farmers.
