Kohima, February 11 (MExN): ATMA Chunliha block, Kohima district conducted a demonstration on preparation of Bordeaux mixture at Orange Farm School in Tesophenyu village on January 22.
A press release from ATMA Kohima in a press release stated that Bordeaux mixture is a combination of copper sulphate, lime and water. It is an effective fungicide and bactericide that has been used for decades to control diseases of fruits, nut trees, vine fruits and ornamental plants. These minerals, when mixed in the correct order, provide long lasting protection to plants against diseases. The ability of Bordeaux mixtures to adhere to plants in rainy weather makes it an excellent choice for winter fungicides.
Four farmers were taught and demonstrated on how to prepare this mixture.
Meanwhile, ATMA Chunlikha block, Kohima district conducted a demonstration on the topic ‘soil management practices in paddy field” at SRI Farm School in Tesophenyu village on January 23.
Five farmers were demonstrated on the cultivation practices of Dhaincha crop and taught on the importance of green manuring and how it can boost the nutrients availability of the soil. Dhaincha is generally grown as green manuring crop. It can be grown in all seasons.
March-April is the best for sowing. The seeds are broadcasted in the field at the rate of 30-40 kg/ha and is harvested at 45-60 days after sowing. The plant after reaching a certain height or budding stage is cut down and incorporated into the soil for further decomposition.
The objective of green manuring are to increase organic matter content of the soils, maintain and improve soil structure, reduce loss of nutrients particularly nitrogen, provide a source of nitrogen for the succeeding crop and reduce soil erosion and thereby increases the production of crops.
