Awareness campaign on legal rights conducted

Kohima, August 27 (MExN): Kohima Law College in collaboration with Nagaland Legal Services Authority (NLSA) and Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation under the lecturer-in-charged of BCI practical paper Kezhokhoto Savi conducted awareness campaign on various legal rights concerning to citizens and the students in particular at the chapel hall of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima on August 26.
Savi, president of NVCO speaking on ‘Consumer Rights’ stated that we are all consumers as the definition of Consumer is a person who uses goods and services for a consideration of price. Natural gifts such as air, sunlight and rains are the only items uses by us free of cost but the rest of items be it goods or services are all for a price and almost all the goods and services are coming from outside except some few agricultural products and this is also one of the reasons prices are exorbitant. And at the same time this is the reason that awareness is more important to us unless we know our rights and duties the traders will continue to exploit us. Most of us are least bothered to check or read necessary information before buying such as for any item of goods where the best use is before six months but the date of manufactured or date of packing was never mentioned then in this case the best use before six months is still the best before six months even after two years or more. To insist on receipt or cash memo should be our habit as a genuine consumer/buyer and in case of any defects you can approach the retailer/shopkeeper to correct or replace the defected one.
Savi also extended support to the ban of Teachers’ Day badge sales by the State Level Committee (Education) and further asked the students not to sell newspaper in form of donation if at all the students would like to sell newspaper as this is dignity of labour but a harassment. Many non-local newspaper vendor can earn not less than Rs.200/-(out of commission) early in the morning by charging Rs.3/- per paper. “Don’t contribute more towards Kohima as a fund-raising centre which is affecting price of essential commodities,” he further added.
The other topics such as legal services authority, FIR, Juvenile (Care & Protection of Children), Motor Accidental Claims, Domestic violence, RTI, cyber crime were dwelt by several speakers. Earlier legal literacy & awareness was conducted at St. Joseph’s College Jakhama where the students shared their grievances particularly transportation fare charged by Tata Sumo/taxi/buses in an exorbitant manner where the fare was raised by the owners & drivers from Rs.20/- to Rs.25/- per passenger within a distance of hardly 14 Kms i.e AOC Kohima to Jakhama but again recently it has been raised to Rs.35/- per passenger which too much and illegal as it was not fixed by competent authority/government. Raising Rs.10/- at a time is too much and cannot be tolerated. The NVCO expressed support to the initiative of Southern Angami Students’ Union (SASU) in fighting against the huge increase at a time.
