Kohima, September 8 (MExN): The Angami Women Organisation (AWO) and the Nagabazar Panchayat have strongly condemned the recent sex trafficking case uncovered in Kohima, which involved the trafficking and exploitation of a minor girl.
In a statement, the AWO said it was “deeply disturbed and strongly condemns the recent incident in Kohima where an organised sex trafficking racket was uncovered, involving the trafficking and exploitation of a minor girl.” The organisation noted that the arrest of nine individuals, including the alleged mastermind, has revealed “a painful reality that such illegal and unwanted activities are happening in our society.”
“These practices are completely alien to our Naga culture, values and way of life. As Nagas, we uphold the dignity of every individual especially of our women and children. The exploitation of the vulnerable is not only a grave crime but also a moral degradation and an assault on humanity,” the AWO stated.
The organisation expressed appreciation for the “prompt and courageous action taken by the Kohima Police in rescuing a minor girl and the arrest of nine accused.” It urged authorities to ensure that perpetrators are “brought to a swift and uncompromising justice without any leniency, and that such networks are rooted out completely.” It further appealed for continued support to the survivor through counselling, rehabilitation, and protection.
Meanwhile, the Nagabazar Panchayat issued a press release expressing “deep shock and anguish following the recent bust of a sex trafficking network by Kohima North Police in coordination with the Women Police Station.”
It said that among those arrested was an individual identified as Neisedenuo Thuphre, reportedly residing in Nagabazar Colony from Chakhabama village. The Panchayat clarified, “Upon immediate inquiry, it has been confirmed that Neisedenuo Thuphre is a tenant and not a permanent resident of the colony.”
“The Panchayat strongly condemns any activity that tarnishes the reputation and dignity of our community. We reiterate our commitment to upholding the values of safety, integrity, and lawful conduct within the colony,” it stated.
The Panchayat extended its full support to law enforcement agencies and urged them to pursue the matter “with utmost seriousness.” It also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to ensure the safety and sanctity of the neighborhood.
