SBI Officers Association (SBIOA) Regional Secretary, TL Lango Neikha speaks during the first day of the two-day bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Union across India on December 16.

Deposits, withdrawal and other services affected, but ATMs functioning in all places, informs UFBU
Dimapur, December 16 (MExN): Banking services like deposits and withdrawal at branches, cheque clearance and loan sanctions were affected on December 16 as the United Forum of Bank Union (UFBU), Nagaland committee joined with the rest of the bank unions across the country on a two-day strike.
However, ATMs will be functioning in all the places throughout the strike, informed a press release from Tokili Holo, Dy Manager, RBO Dimapur.
The UFBU called the strike to protest against the union government's decision to privatise several banks in the country.
All bank employees of public sector banks (PSBs) including the SBI participated on day one of the strike at State Bank of India (SBI) Regional Business Office, Supermarket Complex on Thursday, the release said.
Speaking on the occasion, SBI Officers Association (SBIOA) Regional Secretary, TL Lango Neikha said that the strike was necessitated as the union government was not ready to listen to the demands of UFBU.
“Privatisation of banks is neither efficient nor safety as in the past many private banks had failed,” he maintained, adding that it would create crony capitalism, financial exclusion and only lead to loss of job.
The rural population of the country will not have easy banking access, Neikha added.
Others who spoke at the programme included Ramesh Hasnu, Deputy General Secretary, ST/ SC Welfare Association; Anthony Ngouri Executive Member of SBIOA, and Talisunep Longkumer, President SBIOA.
The UFBU, an umbrella body of 9 bank unions, had called a two-day bank strike as the government had decided to introduce the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 during the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament.
The bill aims to privatise public sector banks, the release added.
