Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome, today said teachers have bigger responsibilities cut out for them in the coming future – transforming a literate society to an enlightened and educated society.
“You (teachers) changed our society from illiterate to literate. Now in the next 50 years you have to transform our society from literate to enlightened and educated society…this challenge the teachers have to face head on,” the DC said. Addressing the ‘Dimapur District Common Teachers’ Day’ celebration here at Christian HSS Covenant Hall, Yhome said the responsibilities of teachers have grown tremendously over the years as they not only have to educate but also confront a host of issues and challenges.
Comparing the state’s education statistics before and after statehood, Yhome said in 1951, Nagaland’s literacy rate was 10.5%, which shot exponentially to 79.55% as per the 2011 Census. He said the present high literacy rate in the state was all due to the sincere and dedicated sacrifices of the teachers. The DC also reminded that the contributions of teachers go beyond statistics and figures; most importantly they are considered as role models to students and society at large.
Paying homage and honour to past and present teachers for building the society, Yhome urged teachers to maintain accountability, humanity and respectability in the best interests of students and society.
The DC also felicitated the teachers who received awards on the occasion.
Earlier, Deputy District Education Officer Dimapur, Amongla Jamir, delivered welcome address and chairman of Livingstone Foundation HSS–cum-president All Nagaland Private Schools Association, Andrew Ahoto, exhorted on the significance of Teachers’ Day.
