Economic growth and quality standards go hand-in-hand

In line with the World Standards Day 2025 theme, ‘Shared Vision for a Better World: SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals,’ the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Guwahati Branch Office, organised a BIS Stakeholders Conclave in Dimapur on October 24.
Through the conclave, the BIS seek to create awareness among industries about product standards and the right of consumers to quality products.
The introductory session had officials from the Nagaland state government in attendance as special guests as speakers, including the Chairperson of the Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation Limited (NIDCL), Kvulo Lorin; Chief Executive Officer of the Dimapur Municipal Council Thungchanbemo Tungoe; and Under Secretary, Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Tokai V Sumi.
Under Secretary Tokai V Sumi, in his address, stressed on a ‘Shared Vision for a Better World’ based on standards that ensure quality, safety, and trust. According to him, achieving sustainable development goals mandates collaboration between government, industries, academia, and citizens, with institutions like the BIS playing a key role. He called for integrating BIS standards across Nagaland's industries with emphasis on the citizens’ quality of life.
NIDCL Chairperson, Kvulo Lorin, reminded that the Nagaland and northeastern region’s focus on attracting global investment also rests on producing high-quality goods. He said that organisations like the BIS are crucial to the state’s economic integration and sustainable development, necessitating a strong partnership between regulators, producers, institutions, and consumers, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals 17. He advocated for empowering consumers with knowledge of BIS certifications to drive demand for quality. He further urged the integration of BIS standards into government practices, education, and business, envisioning Nagaland as a region built on trust and quality.
DMC CEO asserted that quality standards are essential for progress and urged the citizens to learn about genuine products and engage on consumer rights. He called for products made in Nagaland to achieve global recognition, facilitated by the BIS. Tungoe stressed the importance of everyone's commitment to quality, echoing Gandhi's emphasis on the customer's central role.
He however lamented the nonattendance of the business community as the audience was largely students. According to him, the experience and perspective of entrepreneurs, business owners, and other industry professionals would have made the conclave even more rewarding.
There were no consumer rights bodies as well.
The introductory session was followed by workshops. President of the Dimapur Bar Association, WR Ngullie presented on consumer rights. Deputy Director of the BIS Guwahati office gave an overview on the BIS, and Dr Shasanka Shekhar Borkotoky gave a presentation on the significance of the World Standards Day.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the official national standards body for India functioning under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Its responsibilities include developing and applying standards for both consumer goods and industrial practices, while ensuring that products and services meet quality and safety benchmarks.
