DIMAPUR | JULY 11 : An abandoned black suitcase near Clock Tower junction in the heart of the commercial hub on Monday afternoon initially created panic as onlookers and citizens suspected it contained a bomb. Police, army and Territorial Army personnel cordoned the area as the army’s 261 bomb disposal company went into action and ‘blast charge’ the suitcase around 6.30pm.
However, the seemingly high-voltage drama and powerful blast of the detonator that shattered window glasses in the opposite buildings, turned out to an empty exercise as the suitcase reportedly did not contain any bomb. Personnel of the Dimapur police bomb squad were of the opinion that there was no point in using powerful detonator to blast the suitcase in public place, which did not contain any bomb or explosives.
The police bomb squad which arrived at the scene first, said that a lady’s bag and another small carry bag were also found alongside the suitcase just below the footpath between Axis Bank and Eastern Mirror reception office. “We inspected these items and did not detect any explosives or bomb,” a bomb squad personnel said. To make sure, the bomb squad also hooked the suitcase and dropped it from a 5-feet height, but there was no explosion when the suitcase hit the ground.
Meantime, the army bomb disposal squad arrived later at the scene with their array of gadgets and sniffer dogs and took over from the police bomb squad. Without much ado, the army bomb squad detonated the suitcase, which shook and rattled windows of nearby buildings.
The random action of detonating the reportedly harmless suitcase in public place has raised eyebrows with some section of public alleging that the army was trying to “sensationalize and create situation.”
Interestingly, the “hero” who detonated the suitcase, one Hav. T Satyanarayan, approached media-persons and proudly declared his name and designation. Personnel of 164 TA also did want to be left out in the “high drama.” The police arrived first but it was the TA who called in the army bomb disposal squad,” a TA jawan told mediapersons.
“The detonation has destroyed evidence,” rued a police bomb squad member. Later, the police bomb squad also showed the two other items (lady’s bag and carry-bag), which were kept in the squad’s vehicle. The bags contained items of clothing and a pillow.
