Call for unity and peaceful assertion of Naga rights

The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union commemorated the 79th Naga Independence Day at its office in Dimapur on August 14.

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 14 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) on Thursday commemorated the 79th Naga Independence Day at its office here with a call for unity and peaceful assertion of Naga rights.

The programme, attended by office bearers, elders, community members and well-wishers, featured a keynote address by Global Naga Forum (GNF) member Kevitho Kera.

The event began with an invocation by WS Kahor, Deputy Speaker, DNSU, followed by flag hoisting and a welcome address by DNSU president Hinoto P Aomi. DNSU general secretary Michael Kath chaired the proceedings, while Tsuktilong Jamir, Secretary (Games and Sports), pronounced the benediction.

In his speech, Kera invoked the 1929 memorandum to the Simon Commission, urging Nagas to uphold the spirit of their forefathers and reject divisions. “We are one and we should always be one,” he said, adding that he believed Nagas would unite when the time came.

Advocating non-violence, he said, “India has every reason to be afraid of a mass Naga non-violent uprising. When lakhs of Nagas rise up peacefully and non-violently, India will be clueless on how to respond.”

He commended the DNSU for its role in sustaining the Naga movement and concluded with the rallying call: “Leave us alone to determine for ourselves as in ancient times. Ura Uvie and Kuknalim!” The DNSU extended gratitude to participants, constituent units, seniors and well-wishers for their support.
