Call to uphold Clean Election principle

Kohima, July 25 (MExN): The Sümi Baptist Church Kohima (SBCK) Old Ministers' Hill Fellowship Kohima held its Sunday evening fellowship on July 24. The guest speaker, Vitoka Aye who was the then executive member in the Clean Election Campaign under Zunheboto district spoke on ‘clean election,’ stated a press release issued by Media Cell, Sumi Community Old Ministers' Hill, Kohima.

Aye revealed that as per the survey of the Development Research Committee, the maximum amount of fund has been allotted to Zunheboto district in the past few years particularly on road sector. “However, there is least development seen in the region all because the people had failed to uphold the Clean Election principle,” he claimed.

Stating that the institute of Church has a major role to play in process of Clean Election in Nagaland, Aye said that organising Clean Election Campaign in the church and other common public platforms is not enough. “With the initiative of the church along with the civil societies they should undertake a door to door Clean Election Campaign and it must reach the grassroot level especially in the rural areas. Church leaders should take the pledge and take the lead of the Clean Election campaign,” he added.

“Clean Election should be people’s movement and NBCC should also make all the political parties and intending candidates to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) before proceeding the election,” Aye suggested.

“Why blame only the politicians for poor development?” he asked while adding, “public are equally responsible because we demand money and let the candidates buy our votes which compels them to recover their election expenditures from the public fund after they were elected, hence leading to poor development in the state.”

He added that today the common public as well as the leaders have failed to uphold the Clean Election principle in the State and as a result, “we are lacking far behind in every field in comparison to our neighbouring states.”
