Calm and normalcy in the border area, so far

Dimapur, July 7 (MExN): The situation in Assam remains normal, even as the influential All Assam Students Union (AASU) has imposed an economic blockade partially disturbing supply of essential commodities to Mokokchung district.  Reliable sources disclosed that the ASSU leaders are having a meeting at Geeleki with the public for further course of action and also to decide what is best for the two neighbors to do.

It is learnt that the general public of Assam are of the opinion that the people from Nagaland side should also make attempts to keep the age-old relations intact between the states of Assam and Nagaland.  Reports disclosed that earlier today Assam Minister for Law and Justice, Pranab Gogoi and MLA Priphipi Mathi, visited the troubled site and had discussions with the people and the administration.

The two Assamese legislators expressed their strong views that the attack on the villagers and also the killing of the two labourers is wrong and that such kinds of incident should not take place in the future. They also said that they would take up the matter of providing compensation of Rs 3 lakhs to the family members of the deceased labourers, with the Assam Government. The Deputy Commissioner of Sibsagar also extended an ex-gratia of Rs 10,000 each to the next kin of the dead labourers, sources disclosed.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Abhishek Singh said that he has appealed to the district administration of Sibsagar for smooth supply of essential commodities to the district.

He said that trucks carrying essential commodities were halted by the AASU. However, with the intervention of the administration, the trucks were allowed to proceed to the district. There are no shortages of essential commodities as such, said Singh.

Meanwhile, reports from the Anaki area, informed that the local villager today at around 2 pm, caught one non-local from Assam’s side while his accomplice managed to escape.  The villagers think that the two non-locals might either be thieves or intelligence agents from the Assam side. Villagers are keeping strict vigil in and around the vicinity of the village areas sources informed.

The source informed that security reinforcement from the state police force has arrived today at the village. Earlier, only one platoon from the SNAP or 13th NAP battalion was providing security to the villagers.

The villagers also met with state commissioner, TN Mannen today. Sources informed that the Commissioner extended an immediate relief of eight quintals of rice and 200 kgs of daal to the villagers.

So far, every thing is under normal with no untoward incidents, the villagers at the border areas are also happy with the state government for providing the additional security forces, informed the source.
