Campaign on conservation and protection of forest & wildlife conducted

Mon, August 5 (MExN): An awareness campaign programme for conservation and protection of forest and wildlife to mitigate human animal conflict and wildlife crime was organised at Town Hall, Phomching on August 1.  

The programme was organized by Forest department, Nagaland and sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, New Delhi.  

Vrinda Shukla, IPS, SDPO, Mon and special invitee, in her address, emphasized the need for conserving forest and wildlife which is rapidly depleting due to biotic factors. She also spoke on wildlife crime in Mon district, a release from Satya Prakash Tripathi, Chief Wildlife Warden Nagaland said.  

Appreciating the efforts of the department in reaching people for conservation, she appealed the participants for conserving forest and wildlife, making availability of natural resources for future generation on sustained basis.  

Y. M. Jami, IFS, Conservator of Forests, Northern Territorial Circle, Mokokchung and Director, Intanki National Park, Dimapur highlighted the importance of plants for human survival. He also stated that plants and animals can survive without human beings but humans cannot survive without plants and animals, the release added.  

Satya Prakash Tripathi, Chief Wildlife Warden, Nagaland, in his key note address, spoke on the genesis of the human animal conflict prevalent in the state in general and elephant problem in Wokha district in particular. He also briefed the policies of the state government and the MoEF & CC, GoI, New Delhi for addressing the problem.  

Speaking on the importance of forest & wildlife, scenario of forest and wildlife, wildlife crime and concept of community reserves, he appealed the people for protecting forest and wildlife and come forward for declaring their forest for community reserve and contact forest officials immediately in case of damage of their crop, properties, human life.  

The programme was exhorted by W Wangshak, Forest Range Officer. A participation of around 90 persons, officers from Forest department, Police department, chairmen and members of village councils of nearby villages attended the programme.
