Tening, November 25 (MExN): Three-day capacity building workshop for handloom cluster at Tening was inaugurated by Rhosietho Ngouri, ADC Tening at the Tening Town Women Welfare Organization Hall on November 23. 

The workshop is sponsored by UNDP and facilitated by the North East Handicraft and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC), Guwahati in association with Pro Rural Society, Dimapur. Altogether 50 women artisans are attending the programme. 

The ADC exhorted the women to take the opportunity and make use of the association with NEHHDC for improving livelihood through weaving. He said issues like quality assurance and marketing of products can be assisted by organization like NEHHDC, and emphasized on clustering and working in a group. He highlighted the importance of handloom sector that had a lot of potential and also the role of NEHHDC in bringing the market to the women weaver’s cluster. He encouraged the weavers and mothers to get the best out of the training.

Earlier, NEHHDC officials shared on the objectives of the capacity building which is targeting to enhance Design Development and Product Diversification, Price setting and Facilitation of Market Linkages for the weaver’s cluster. NEHHDC is promoted by the Government of India is mandated to train artisans, ensure product quality and link the products to national, regional and international markets. They highlighted the importance of market linkage for commercially viable products.

Pro Rural team also highlighted on the need to identify units particularly from the rural areas, form them into clusters and linking them to resource institutions like the NEHHDC. As many rural artisans lacked the exposure and the capacity, its role is to upgrade their skills and knowledge, forming the artisans into clusters and linking to financial and marketing channels.
