Directorate of Sericulture, Kohima staff and officials during the launch of Castor Oil Processing and Demonstration Unit at Directorate of Sericulture, Kohima.
Kohima, December 16 (MExN): A Castor Oil Processing and Demonstration Unit at Directorate of Sericulture, Kohima was launched by Orenpomo Kikon, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Sericulture.
In his address, Kikon stated that although, elders have spoken about the goodness of castor oil, most of us are only aware of its hair and skin benefits. While in addition to this, castor oil is known for its anti-bacterial, medicinal and therapeutic properties.
Moreover, the by-product Castor flake/cake is a good organic fertilizer, with 100 kg of Castor cake supplying as much nitrogen (N) as 1200 kg of cow dung. The Castor cake has insecticidal properties and is naturally pest repellent which makes it a good option for organic farming.
It may be mentioned that the innovative idea for the processing-cum- demonstration unit could be made into reality through effort and initiative of Alemkumzuk, Deputy Director, Sericulture Department. He stated that to setup such unit does not required heavy investment and interested entrepreneur may contact him during office hour to take up such venture and marketing opportunity for these products as they have potential in the local as well as global market.
