Dimapur, July 12 (MExN): The Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University Professor K Kannan has been given a clean chit by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), it was reported today in the Indian Express. The CBI which was investigating a series of charges leveled against him by Nagaland University teachers has given Kannan a clean chit redeeming his position considerably.
The Nagaland University Teachers’ Association had leveled charges of corruption and financial bungling against Kannan. The CBI has reportedly said that it has not found “anything to substantiate” the allegations against him and has conveyed the same to the Human Resource Development ministry.
However, NUTA General Secretary V Venuh has said that it will not acknowledge the CBI report. Venuh said the CBI team which came three times to investigate the matter was not trustworthy. He informed that the NUTA has already approached the CBI’s Director and HRD Ministry to order a fresh probe against Kannan. Reacting to the news, Kannan said “truth always prevails” and that he has “nothing to hide.” Kannan said he is not involved in any of the charges leveled against him by the NUTA. “It has made me stronger,” he said. He will not be cowed down by any pressure, Kannan added.
Kannan claimed that he was here to uplift the university and see its growth. He did not comment on the fresh probes demanded by NUTA . “People can do whatever they feel like…they don’t want people like me to survive…God will show the way,” Kannan remarked.
According to the Indian Express report, the state government in its own inquiry indicted Kannan on several counts. Charges against him range from alleged harassment of teachers to being too media friendly. That apart, Kannan also came under the CBI’s scrutiny for charges of financial irregularities such as improper use of funds meant for infrastructure and equipments.
