Census: Nagas’ image at stake – Lalthara

Dimapur, July 16 (MExN): The state government has reiterated that the Census operations of 2011 is critical and on the manner it is arrived at, would decide the “prestige, honor and image” of the Naga people “this time”. The much-maligned previous census of Nagaland remains an uncomfortable event for the state and the government has been insisting on honest and reliable census operations, and from the people, truthful enumeration and participation. A message from the Chief Secretary of Nagaland Lalthara, IAS, was received here today restating the need for an honest census.

“Let me reiterate that the current census operation is of crucial importance as the prestige, honor and image of the Nagas are at stake. In addition, everyone knows that we need a correct census for all future development programmes and planning process,” Lalthara reminded all citizens strongly. Urging the people to participate in the census operations with integrity, Lalthara assured that the government on its part is fully committed to see that a “correct census” is taken “this time.”

The chief secretary also extended hearty congratulations to all government officers, employees and departments, and civil society who had engaged in census-related tasks.  In spite of some opposition from vested interests, Lalthara said, the first phase of the census operations has been a success by and large.

“However, more works are ahead and I want you to brace up yourselves and the district administration for a successful outcome when the final count of heads will be taken sometime in February 2010,” the chief secretary said.

Lalthara further acknowledged the role of the Naga civil society organizations who have engaged in the task as community monitor. The Naga Hoho, ENPO, NSF, ENSF, NBCC, NMA and the GBs among others have been the monitors and so far their involvement has been very encouraging, Lalthara said. Congratulating them, the chief secretary urged them to continue their good work, with greater commitment and dedication for a successful census for Nagaland state this time.
