Chümoukedima, August 12 (MExN): An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) reviewed the disaster situation arising from the ongoing monsoon in Nagaland during a briefing session held at Noune Resort, Chümoukedima, on August 11.
The IMCT comprised M Ramachandrudu, Joint Secretary (DM-II), Ministry of Home Affairs; Sanjeev Kumar Suman, Director; Pankaj Pahadia, Deputy Director (FCD); Pradeep Kumar Meena, Executive Engineer; Rajeshwari S Mallegeowda, Director (DoRD); and Priyom Roy, Scientist ‘SF’.
Delivering the keynote address, Advisor, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Z Nyusiethio Nyuthe noted that the State witnessed severe and recurring flooding since July 19, with another major spell reported on August 3, causing widespread disruption across several districts.
He said 11 lives were lost in one district, describing the incident as an unprecedented tragedy for the State.
Several districts and pockets remained cut off for more than a week due to damage to roads and difficult terrain, necessitating the aerial supply of essential food items and relief materials.
Nyuthe highlighted Nagaland’s geographical and climatic vulnerability, noting that the State’s hilly terrain and highly variable rainfall made several areas particularly susceptible to isolation during periods of heavy rain.
He also pointed to unusual spatial variations in rainfall this year, with severe flooding in some areas while others remained comparatively dry, affecting agriculture and livelihoods.
According to the State DIPR, the Advisor acknowledged the coordinated response of the State and Union Governments, including the constitution of IMCTs to assess the damage and requirements.
He also appreciated field visits by the Chief Minister and Union Government representatives, saying these had boosted the morale of affected communities.
Nyuthe expressed hope that the ongoing field assessments would help convey the extent of the damage and suffering and facilitate further assistance for relief and recovery.
Joint Chief Executive Officer, NSDMA, Dr Johnny Ruangmei, presented an overview of the disaster situation during the 2026 monsoon.
The District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) of Mon, Mokokchung, Longleng and Tuensang also presented reports on the disaster situation and preparedness measures in their respective districts.
The Water Resources Department made a separate presentation, followed by an interaction with the IMCT.
The State DIPR release did not specify any decision, recommendation or financial assistance or other outcomes arising from the IMCT’s interaction.
