Poanglüm Mini Hornbill Festival concludes
Tuensang, January 17 (MExN): Poanglüm Mini Hornbill Festival of the Chang community under the theme “WAZA” was celebrated at Loyem Memorial Ground, Tuensang Town from January 13 to 15.
Advisor for Tourism, Government of Nagaland, Khehovi Yepthomi graced the festival as Lamshok Patron. He encouraged the Chang community to venture into tourism with more vigour saying “tourism is one industry that ensures maximum economic benefit in today’s world.”
The Advisor also gave away commendation certificates to villages and associations including Chingmei village for annual turnover of Rs. 1.3 crore from large cardamom production; Chendang village for selling more than 200 tons of potatoes; Longra village for being the largest producer of rice in Chang area; Confederation of Chang Students’ Union (CCSU) for initiating innovative educational reforms; Chang Gazetted Officers’ Association (CGOA) for initiating Urban Sochum (Coaching centre for competitive exams); Father Benjamin Hopong Chingmak for first Catholic Priest from Chang community and also to other individuals for their achievements in different field.
President of Sumi Hoho, Hekhushe Shikhu graced the festival as the Tribal Guest. He remarked on importance of fostering better relation between all communities.
Cultural troupes from different communities, Sangtam, Khiamniungan and Chang presented their traditional dance and songs. Later in the evening, the Poanglüm Hornbill Festival reached its crescendo with various renowned artistes performing classic songs much to the delight of huge crowd present in the celebration venue.
Special guest for the evening was Brigadier SK Sheoran DIG 7th Sector Assam Rifles Tuensang.
Around 40,000 visitors were recorded during the three days Poanglüm Hornbill Festival. A total of 26 morungs were built by different villages which were utilized as exhibition and business stalls. The main items in the business stalls were cash crops, cereals, pulses, organic vegetables, fruits, flowers, ginger candies, organic jaggery, forest produce (NTFP), handicrafts, woodcrafts, souvenirs, river fish cooked in bamboo, local cuisine, barbeques, etc. As per initial estimate, a record turnover of Rs 40-50 lakh was accrued by the Morung business stalls during the celebration.
