Dimapur, June 3o (MExN): Taking immediate measures to stop further erosion of land along the banks of the Chathe River, the Department of Irrigation and Flood Control has proposed a contingent plan in which diversion will be created at the mouth of the river so that the current hitting the Christian Institute Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) wall will be diverted down stream. The department has also framed a detailed project report on a long term basis for protection of the CIHSR complex. Work will resume by December and will be completed before the onset of the next monsoon, the department’s chief engineer T Yanger Ao informed The Morung Express.
Further in a press note issued by the chief engineer stated that, a high level meeting was held on June 29, and it has come to the conclusion that the main cause of the damage is due to pilferage. The department stated that the damage along the banks of the Chathe River has been caused due to pilferage of construction materials such as wire nets and boulders. Rampant extraction of river bed materials like sand and gravel along the construction site has also led to further erosion. The department also stated that it had informed the District Administration to check pilferage and extraction of construction materials but the activities went on unabated.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt from the authorities of CIHSR that most of the pilferage has been caused by encroachers. CIHSR has been facing encroachment problems and has informed the District Administration several times to look into the matter. It was also learnt that the condition of the black topped road is very volatile and has been closed for safety.
