Chizami Seed Bank recognised for climate-resilient agriculture

Phek, April 23 (MExN): A programme on seed conservation was held at ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Phek on April 22 with participation of women farmers associated with the Chizami Community Seed Bank.

The programme focused on conservation of indigenous seed varieties, strengthening local seed systems, and promoting awareness on sustainable agricultural practices.

During the programme, Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK Phek, highlighted the importance of conserving traditional seeds for long-term food and nutritional security. He stressed that indigenous germplasm, adapted to local agro-climatic conditions, plays a key role in sustainable agriculture. He also sensitised farmers on the balanced use of fertilisers to maintain soil health.

Dr Hannah K Asangla, Chief Technical Officer (Agronomy), spoke on principles and practices of seed conservation, including selection, storage, and regeneration of traditional varieties. She emphasised community participation in maintaining seed diversity. Dr T Esther Longkumer, Chief Technical Officer (Soil Science), elaborated on the role of vermicomposting in improving soil fertility and described it as a low-cost and eco-friendly option with income-generating potential for farmers.

The Chizami Community Seed Bank, established in 2018 and managed by the Chizami Women Society, currently conserves over 150 traditional seed varieties, including around 50 paddy varieties, seven types of maize, eight varieties of millets, and several beans and vegetables. The initiative has contributed to preserving agrobiodiversity and promoting climate-resilient agriculture in the region.

ICAR-KVK Phek has been providing technical support to the seed bank since 2024.

The seed bank was recently acknowledged in an episode of “Mann Ki Baat,” where Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated its efforts in conserving traditional crop diversity.

An appreciation certificate was presented to the Chizami Community Seed Bank during the programme in recognition of the efforts of women farmers. Agricultural inputs were also distributed to participants under the NEH Programme of ICAR.

The programme concluded with an interactive session where farmers shared their experiences and discussed challenges related to seed conservation and sustainable agriculture.
