Chümoukedima bans single-use plastics & bottles from August 1

Chümoukedima, July 30 (MExN): In a step towards environmental protection, the Deputy Commissioner of Chümoukedima, Polan John, NCS, has issued an order prohibiting the use of Single-Use Plastic (SUP) items and single-use plastic bottles in the district with effect from August 1, 2026.

The order has been issued in pursuance of the Home Department, General Administration Branch Notification No. GAB-I/MISC-I/2025/391 dated May 18, 2026, to address the serious environmental and ecological challenges posed by the rampant use of SUP. 

To facilitate the clearance of existing stock, a three-week relaxation period from the date of issue of the order has been provided. Thereafter, strict enforcement of the ban will commence across the district, stated a DIPR report.

The prohibited items include plastic carry bags, plastic cutlery such as plates, cups, forks, spoons and straws, thermocol products, polythene, nylon, PVC, polypropylene and polystyrene items, flex banners and posters used during government functions, plastic sticks used for balloons and flags, plastic trays, wrapping and packing films, PVC banners of less than 100 microns, and packaged drinking water bottles below 20 litres capacity used during meetings, functions, seminars and for personal consumption.

The Deputy Commissioner has directed all Heads of Offices, Area Administrative Officers, Chümoukedima Town Council, the District Task Force and other concerned authorities to ensure strict compliance with the order and create public awareness on the ban.
The order will come into force from August 1, 2026, it added.
