School education dept assures bigger platform for students

Earlier, in keynote address, Temsunaro Aier, State Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha Nagaland said that in the past years, musical instruments were provided to the 46 GHSSs in the state.

She said that Samagra Shiksha would give more emphasis on music teachers from this year onwards.

During 2023-24, school choirs were constituted to encourage schools to integrate music as part of school activity as envisaged in National Education Policy 2020, she said.

Aier said the state level school choir competition on two categories (National Anthem and folk song) has been initiated to encourage the students to uphold their culture and traditions and also embrace the feeling of patriotism as responsible citizens.

She encouraged the concerned schools to take music programme forward and nurture the musical talents of the students.

Kevileno Angami, Commissioner & Secretary For School Education & SCERT, Nagaland, informed that the department had introduced music during 2018-19 in 46 schools on pilot basic in Nagaland.

Out of 46, 10 schools were shortlisted and joined the competition today.

She informed that music is one of the subjects which is being assessed in the board examination.

“Music, is, therefore not just a hobby anymore. But it is a subject which is being assessed and which will be a career for many,” she said.

Music and song are part of our culture but it is not just culture now. It is a subject which is being assessed in the examinations, she added.

Asking the students to maintain discipline and continue to practice music, she assured that the department will provide them bigger platform where they can showcase their talents.
