Chümoukedima Village Council flays ECI’s action

Chümoukedima, December 7 (MExN): The Chümoukedima Village Council (CVC) today expressed its “extreme displeasure” with the company undertaking the construction of Dimapur-Kohima 4 lane for allegedly “disregarding all ethics in carrying out their ongoing works.”

A press release issued by its Chairman Razouvotuo Chatsu, the CVC also accused the ECI, the concerned company, of displaying “arrogance and irresponsibility” by ignoring multiple requests against dumping “debris and loose soil into the Chathe River.”

By doing so, the river is polluted and adversely impacts the public, who are primarily dependent on the river as their only water source, the CVC said, adding that the action has caused irreparable damages on the Chathe River.

It has become a matter of grave concern that in some areas the river has been completely blocked by debris and boulders and are at risk of causing flash floods and landslides, it maintained.

“And if such a catastrophe shall befall, ECI shall be held solely responsible for all damages,” the CVC asserted.

Meanwhile, it further maintained the council had written to the office of the Deputy Commissioner requesting to issue an order to ban dumping of earth cutting/loose soil in the Chathe River.

But the matter has fallen on deaf ears and the ECI continues to function most irresponsibly till date, dumping loose soils and boulders directly into the river, the CVC further stated.

While taking “strong exception of the matter,” it noted that the CVC has been very patient in the past by trying to reason with ECI without any positive outcome.

In this regard, the CVC asked the ECI to put their “acts together and immediately discontinue” the dumping of debris and loose soil into the river.

Devoid of this, the council said that it might be compelled to “take drastic measures to protect its land from defacement, and in such instances the ECI shall be fully responsible for any consequences.”

ECI could not be reached for comment.
