Churches can help tackle plastic pollution: NVCO

Kohima, March 14 (MExN):  The Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) on Sunday took its two-weeklong campaign on consumer rights to the congregation of Jakhama Baptist Church.

According to a press release from the NVCO Media Cell, the organisation’s President Kezhokhoto Savi highlighted the theme of this year’s World Consumer Rights Day—‘Tacking Plastic Pollution’ and also spoke on the topic of food safety.

Savi said that churches can play a very important role in tackling the problem of plastic pollution by discouraging the use of single-use plastics such as bottles, plate, cups, etc., during any church feasts, jubilees and church members' wedding feasts. He said that while plastic is a highly useful material, its unsustainable consumption and production has greatly impacted the ecosystems and caused negative environmental consequences.

On the topic of food safety, Savi called on food business operators to operate along the guidelines of the Food Safety & Standards Act 2006 which is implemented by the Government of Nagaland as well as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FS&SAI). Ensuring food safety, he said, would help prevent, detect and manage food borne risks and contribute towards food security, human health, economy prosperity, tourism and sustainable development.

Elaborating on the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and its correlation with the Consumer Protection Act 1986, Savi underscored that the consumers have the right to safety and are protected against marketing of goods and services which are hazardous to life. He said that Nagaland has a level-2 laboratory which is the first in the entire North East region, and encouraged food business operators (FBOs) to come forward in bringing their products/food items/samples to get tested in the State Public Health Laboratory.

The release further stated that the NVCO and the final year students of Kohima Law College would be organizing a function to commemorate World Consumer Rights Day at Kohima Law College on March 15, 11:00 pm. NVCO President Kezhokhoto Savi who is also an Asst Professor at KLC would be the guest speaker and other speakers for the event include Asst Professor Soni, Asst Professor Moasenla, Lungrangpeong Nza and Menosieno Nakhro, the release stated.
