DIMAPUR, APRIL 19 (MExN): The Food Standards Agency today warned that a brand of chilli pickle sold in the UK contains chilli contaminated with the illegal dye Sudan I. Naga Chilli Pickle Extra Hot, which is sold under the brand name Pran, has been found to be contaminated with the dye. Sudan I could cause cancer, although there is no immediate threat of illness. People most at risk would be those eating contaminated products regularly and over a long period of time.
The sauce, which is manufactured in Bangladesh, comes in a 300g glass jar with a screw top lid. The label is red with lettering in yellow and white, has a picture of chilli peppers on the front and bears the Pran logo.
It has been supplied by a small distributor to Asian retail outlets throughout England including Newcastle, Bristol, Manchester, Sunderland and Luton. The Agency has asked local authorities to ensure that this product is removed from sale in any shops where it is likely to be stocked. The Agency has been investigating which food products in the UK have been affected by contaminated chilli powder since July.
